This $16,000 Portal Axle Kit Will Make your Bronco Dwarfs Raptors

Serious off-road drivers will do everything they can to get a leg up on the tracks they want to tackle. One particularly effective modification is the installation of gate hubs and now a Ukraine-based company has built the first commercially available range of gate hubs for the Ford Bronco. This single modification adds 5.11 inches (130 mm) of ground clearance for off-road blue oval regardless of trim level, but it will cost you at least $16,000.

First discovered by the folks at Road And Track, the Werewolf Tech Portal Axle is an exciting way to add off-road prowess to the Bronco. Unlike a conventional lift kit, gate hubs effectively lift the entire vehicle including the axles and control arms themselves. It achieves this through the use of a pinned gear set attached to both the wheel hub and axle.

The gate’s “middle man” pivot allows the hub to sit farther from the hub while still transmitting power to it reliably. If this sounds like a complicated solution to the rather rare problem of needing extreme ground clearance, you’d be right. This is precisely the reason why portal hub kits are so rare. As R&T rightly points out, this is also why the Mercedes-AMG G63 4×4² is the only OEM vehicle available with such a setup.

Also keep in mind that the Bronco is no off-road sag to begin with. Most trims come with 8.3 inches (210 mm) of ground clearance which means the Werewolf group will lift up to 13.4 inches (340 mm) or just over 3 inches (76 mm) more than a normal GMC Hummer. On the other hand, Bronco Wildtrak owners will end up with a ground clearance of 16.6 inches (421 mm) with this kit.

There is no other production car for sale today with this kind of space less than its vital components. Even a Hummer cannot climb over the same obstacles as it has a maximum limit of 15.9 inches (403 mm) in ‘extraction’ mode. Sure, $16,000 is a lot of money, but it will literally allow you to look at the owners of the Bronco Raptor and GMC Hummer.

In addition, Werewolf Tech offers a warranty of 31,000 miles (50,000 km) on the gate axles. It also recommends that buyers use 38-inch tires to make the most of their new capabilities.
