The Texas police have a powerful new game to catch criminals in the form of the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat. However, this is not a Hellcat standard.

The entry-level Challenger SRT Hellcat leaves the factory with a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 with 707 horsepower. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) – Southeast Texas revealed that the Hellcat had been upgraded to 1,080 hp and had already been seized before it was given to the agency by a judge.

A 2020 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye was seized by police in April 2021 after the driver engaged in dangerous street racing and evaded law enforcement officers reaching speeds of 160 mph (258 km/h) and driving erratically, according to Texas DPS. Police rudely noted that they “converted from dodging law enforcement at Harris’s company to catching criminals wherever he roams in Texas.”

In its new role in community service, the tough Challenger has received a black and white case from Black Diamond Customs, perfect for a new police cruiser.

Oftentimes, the high-performance vehicles that join police fleets do so largely for promotional purposes but it seems the Texas police are serious about running a Dodge. Can it be used to catch street racers? This is definitely something we’d like to see but any officer with a chance to drive a Dodge should probably go through some special training to make sure he can handle all that power.

No upgrades were mentioned to the powertrain in the Challenger but we suspect they benefited from installing a large supercharger and some interior changes.
